The Mentors

Think of the “learning environment” as everything that helps us learn – not just the classroom, but also the school grounds, the resources we use, the people around us, and even the way we feel when we’re learning. “Interconnected systems” means that all these parts are linked together.

STEP 1: Identifying Global Issue

Exploring, Wondering, and Questioning

Bullying in Indonesia Education

From the articles and news we’ve read, we found that bullying happens in many schools in Indonesia. If it happens, then how can we feel safe at school? How can we get a safe learning environment? This issue has become a problem that requires us to research more about it. It’s in line with SDG number 4, Quality Education with goal, ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

What We Got from the Research?

Based on the news that we have read, there are still many students being bullied in their school. The students sometimes do bully without even realizing it, such call

Step 2: Determining Timing and Time Frame

Making Connections between Previous Learning and Current Learning

Step 3: Engaging Support from the Learning Community

Collecting data from various communities, such as the governments, non-government organizations, parents, learning enthusiasts, and other schools.

Planning for Action

Based on the data that we gathered from experts and survey, we created a concept in use to help us planning our action to create a safe learning environment.

Step 5: Monitoring the Exhibition

“Our Grade 5 students are currently immersed in their PYP Exhibition, a culminating inquiry-based project under the transdisciplinary theme of ‘How We Organize Ourselves.’ This year, they are focusing on the crucial topic of creating and maintaining a safe learning environment.

Through in-depth investigations guided by their chosen lines of inquiry, the students are exploring the various elements that contribute to a positive and secure space for learning. They are delving into questions such as:

  • What are the essential components of a healthy and safe learning environment?
  • What challenges can threaten the safety and well-being within our learning spaces?
  • What are our individual and collective responsibilities in ensuring a safe and supportive environment for everyone?
  • What actions can we take to promote and sustain a learning environment where all students feel secure, respected, and empowered to learn?

Throughout this exhibition, our Grade 5 students will be conducting research, collaborating with experts, analyzing their findings, and most importantly, taking meaningful action to make a positive difference in our school community and beyond. We invite you to follow their journey as they explore this vital topic and work towards creating learning environments where everyone can thrive.”

Step 6: Sharing the Exhibition

“After weeks of in-depth inquiry into what it means to have a safe and thriving learning environment, our Grade 5 students are ready to share their powerful learning journey and the meaningful actions they have taken. Inspired by their research and a deep understanding of their responsibilities, they have channeled their learning into impactful initiatives focused on:

Advocacy: Video Bullying

We made it because 73% of students aged 8 to 13 still bullied their friends. We showed this video through special assembly at main hall to raise students’ awareness about bullying.

ADVOCACY: CAMPAIGN

Next, as an advocacy action, we created a campaign through role- play about a safe learning environment and bullying. We also gave information through a presentation.

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP: INFORMATIVE POSTER

To visualize the importance of bullying information, we created a poster as a reminder to prevent bullying at school. We also share some bullying posters with SDN 07 Cilandak to make our action sustainable.

PARTICIPATION: TPPK JUNIOR

Next, we join TPPK team as a junior. TPPK stands for Tim Pencegahan dan Penanganan Kekerasan. TPPK is a team that the government designs to solve three sins in education at school. The members consist of teachers and students.

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP: SECRET CYLINDER

Last, we invented a secret cylinder program. It’s a container or place to store compliments that you write to classmates secretly. People can share stories here not only as compliments but also as stories.

The purpose is to appreciate the good things around us, making it a positive activity in class. We share the cylinder with G1-G5 classes and PYP teachers.

Hence, not only the students but also the teachers can share their feelings and appreciate other teachers’ kindness to build a safe learning environment.

Panel Session

Alhamdulillah, we did the pre-panel and panel to share our journey to share about a safe learning environment.
