Sharing the Planet
An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.
Al-Quran Verse
QS.
Step 1: Identifying Global Issue
Land Conversion
Deforestation has been a major issue in Indonesia for decades, and continues to be today. Just 120 years ago, an estimated 84% of Indonesia was forested, with that number having fallen to 54% by 2015. Between 1990 and 2015 alone, almost a quarter of all the forested area in Indonesia was destroyed. Between 2014 and 2015, just under two FIFA regulation football pitches were lost in every minute, of every hour, of every day.
Palm oil production is an important part of the Indonesian economy. Indonesia is by far the largest producer in the world, accounting for over 50% of global production. Currently palm oil plantations cover around 120,000 km2 of the country. For reference, this is around 3.3 times the entire area of Taiwan or around 6.2% of the entire land area of Indonesia. The expansion of palm oil production is often being performed in tandem with lumber extraction. It is fairly standard practice of palm oil companies to burn the remainder of a forest once it has been sufficiently logged and start the planting of oil palms.
If there is no action to this situation, we will have biodiversity loss, CO2 emission, climate change. Therefore, we are interested in this topic to find better solution to solve this problems.
Effective Crops
Indonesia’s agriculture sector is forecast to continue growing, albeit at a lower pace compared to the industry and services sectors. The agricultural sector of Indonesia comprises large plantations (both state-owned and private) and smallholder production modes. The large plantations tend to focus on commodities which are important export products (palm oil and rubber), while the smallhold farmers focus on rice, soybeans, corn, fruits and vegetables. The most important agricultural products of Indonesia are: palm oil, cassava, corn, rice, rubber, etc.
Step 2: Determining Time & Frame
During step 2, we set the time frame for our exhibition. We also discuss the possible primary resources that can give us information about our topic. We plan to visit Kementerian Pertanian, Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, and Palm Oil Company. Before we visit those places, we try to find information about their function and role in the sustainability of palm oil. Then, we found out that there is some certification that can help us prevent deforestation. The certification was under RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) and ISPO (Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil).
Factors Affecting Palm Oil Production
- Topographic conditions: rainfall quantity, growing region.
- Growing conditions: irrigation regime, damage caused by pests.
- Maturity of the palm oil plantation.
- The time from harvest to oil production.
- The production process: from extraction to bottle.
- The walfare of the workers

Step 4: Organizing the Learning
Experiment & Action Plan
We got lots of infromation from the speakers. We know the reason behind the deforestation, how to plant palm oil plantation, the function of palm oil for human, the suply and demand of palm oil, and how to make palm oil sustainable. The next step of our project is conducting experiment.
After we discussed about our experiment and action. We started to analyze the data and create questions for our survey. The goal of the survey is to know the understanding of people in and outside Al Jabr about palm oil sustainability. We will distribute the survey through offline and online (Google Form).

Grand Lucky & Superindo Department Store
As we have already got the result of our experiment. We decided to do some actions such as:
- Educate Al Jabr students and staff. The media that we use is video, book, and games.
- Educate community outside Al Jabr. The media that we use is educative video and games. We share the video in Instagram, YouTube, and other social media. We also share the video to RSPO, Kementerian Pertanian, PT SMART Tbk., and PT Sawit Sumbermas Sarana Tbk.
Informative Video
We made an informative video about sustainable palm oil. The video was uploaded to Al Jabr YouTube channel so everyone can watch and learn together with us. Kindly click the video to learn more!
Books
We made an informative book about sustainable palm oil. The book was printed and donated to Al Jabr library and other schools.

Online Game
We made a game in WordWall. The goal of this game is to know the understanding of others about sustainable palm oil after we deliver the action. You can access the game by clicking the link! Enjoy and let’s support sustainable palm oil.
