clean and sustainable Transportation

HOW THE WORLD WORKS

An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how human use their understanding of scientific principles; and the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.

Quran verses

(Q.S. Al-Hajj: 65)

Key Concepts

Lines of Inquiry

Learning Outcomes

Function, Connection, Responsibility

  • How the alternative energy can be used for zero-emission transportation.
  • How the clean transportation connects to the energy conservation.
  • Human’s responsibility to use greener transportation.
  • Explain the connection of transportation that use alternative energy to living things.
  • Analyze how electric vehicle produce zero emission.
  • Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of fossil fuel and sustainable vehicles in response to the gas emission production

Step 1: Identifying Global Issue

Exploring, Wondering, and Questioning

Vehicles such as cars, planes, and lorries contribute to air pollution. They use fossil fuels, like gas, to power their engines. Factories that are used to produce many of the products we enjoy every day also give off toxic substances that pollute our air. Some air pollution – like the production of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide – is invisible, but other air pollution you can see. We realized that a lot of people are using gasoline cars which is the dangerous cause of pollution and lack of fossil fuels.

In the beginning, the students thought the solution was a solar-powered car. Solar energy technologies and power plants do not produce air pollution or greenhouse gases when operating. Using solar energy can have a positive, indirect effect on the environment when solar energy replaces or reduces the use of other energy sources that have larger effects on the environment. However, there are environmental issues related to the production and use of solar energy technologies.

But soon learned that it is not possible to have a car that is all solar-powered energy it also needs electric energy using a controller and batteries.

Therefore, the students come up with the solution by using EVS, the student won’t run out of fossil fuels but still slowly have lack of non-renewable energy because it cannot be all full renewable energy however it is still a bit more effective and better for the environment.

Step 2: Determining Timing and Time Frame

Making Connection between Previous and Current Learning

In this step, students formulated their own Central Idea and Lines of Inquiry using their previous inquiry questions. Besides that, they also already set the time frame to develop an action plan so that the goal can be met within the stated time frame.

This time frame helps to prevent everyday tasks from taking priority over their longer-term goals.

Step 3: Engaging Support from the Learning Community

Collecting Data and Reporting Finding or Researching and Seeking Information

We invited 3 (three) guest speakers who are experts in clean and environmentally friendly vehicle to answer the inquiry questions. Beside that, we wanted to get the insight about our experiment and action.

  • ITS Surabaya has started researching about eco-friendly vehicle since 1985.
  • Nogogeni ITS team is one of the vehicle research team in Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember Surabaya that focuses in developing two vehicles, one uses ethanol and one uses electricity.

  • There are 3 main components of an electric vehicle power; the motor, the controller and the battery.

  • Pertamina supports Clean Energy and Electric Vehicle by developing a Fast Charging Public Electric Vehicle Charging Station (SPKLU)

  • It is in regard to the Acceleration of the Battery-Based Electric Motor Vehicle Program as well as Pertamina’s efforts to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions in Indonesia

  • The source of electricity used from PLN

  • Currently charge electricity at SPKLU is still free

  • Pertamina has already had six electric vehicle charging stations in SPBU in Jakarta: SPBU Fatmawati, SPBU MT Haryono, SPBU Lenteng Agung, SPBU Kuningan, SPBU Soekarno Hatta, SPBU BPPT Serpong

  • Pertamina also cooperates with Gojek and Grab Indonesia, which is committed to increasing the number of its electric vehicle fleet, which will accelerate the battery-based motor vehicle program in Indonesia.

  • PT. Bluebird has started using Electric Vehicles from 2019.

  • There are four types of EVs that Bluebird has been using. They are BYD E6, Tesla Model X, BYD T3, and Hyundai Kona. The other one is a Hybrid car from Prius.

  • Electric vehicles typically have a smaller carbon footprint than gasoline cars, even when accounting for the electricity used for charging.

  • At the end of 2022, Bluebird sets the target to use 200 units of electric vehicles.

Step 4: Organizing Learning

Experimenting and Playing with Possibilities Solving Problems in a Variety of Ways

Experiment 1

Experiment 2

Experiment 1

Investigating the Impact of Gas Emission Exposure to Plants

As we received the information that gas emission lead to environmental effects, such as pollutants, bad air quality, global warming and harmful for living things, we would like to check its effect through the plants.

On the first attempt, we put the plant in front of the tailpipe of the gasoline car with the machine on. The effect of gas emission could not really be seen on the plant even we tried to see it through the microscope. Thus, we considered that we should have put the plant longer and change the plant.

First plant that gets the exposure of gas emission from car.
Second plant with gas emission but still get the air
Third plant without gas emission.

On the second attempt, we prepared three boxes with the same plants with different treatment. The result showed that the plant that is exposed to the gas emission will slowly damage.

Experiment 2 Validating the theory: Does Electric Vehicle really produce NO gas emission?

After we conducted the first experiment, it brought us to be more curious on Electric Vehicle. We would like to prove that electric vehicle produce zero fuel carbon footprint. Then, we compared it to the gasoline vehicle. We checked from the sound level using the sound level meter app, checked the color by making the gas emission catcher, and checked the odor that is produced by the vehicle’s machines.

The result: sound level

The result: the color/effect on the paper plate

Black particles were found on the paper plate.
The petroleum jelly melted because of gas emission exposure.
There was no changing on the color of the emission catcher. The petroleum jelly did not melt.

Data Analysis of Gasoline and Electric Vehicle

Experiment 3

Evaluating the Impact of Gas Emission to Different Distances

In 5 cm, the paper plate turned into different color. It has black particles on it. The closer it is to the exhaust, the dirtier it will be.
