We choose this problem because we believe that air pollution is bad to our health and we concern that clean air will disappear in the future. Using the backward design, we plan to do our action at school and transportation is being used daily. In this research, we try to discover what makes air pollution be danger, cause and effect of it, and the solution to end it.

Step 1 – Identifying Globally Significant Issues

We searched for and read articles about the content of air pollution and data about air pollution caused by transportation in Jakarta. We investigate the effect to human that led us to our main topic. The focus of our research will be finding solution to avoid illness caused by having too much interraction to polluted air that is produced from transportation excretion.

Step 2 – Determining The Timing and Time Frame

To make sure the project is running well on time, we set a timeline. We also relate our focus of topic with what we learn in the previous grade and define the time frame of prior knowledge.

Step 3 – Enganging Support from the Learning Community

To deepen our understanding and answer our hypothesis, we met experts from Dinas Lingkungan Hidup Pemerintah Provinsi DKI Jakarta and Suku Dinas Kesehatan Kota Administrasi Jakarta Selatan.

Visiting Dinas Lingkungan Hidup Pemerintah Provinsi DKI Jakarta Office

On February 1, we met Pak Tiyana Brotoadi S.Mn., M.T. (Head of Pollution Control Section) and his friends in Dinas Lingkungan Hidup Pemerintah Provinsi DKI Jakarta office, located in Cililitan, East Jakarta. They explained about what is considered as polluted air, what is inside a polluted air, what are the cause and effect of air pollution, and the solution from government to stop air pollution. We also discussed on some action that we may do to participate in stopping air pollution.

We got excited from the visit because we and the experts share the same goal. We made a reflection using 6 thinking hats so that we can share to everyone the knowledge that we have.

“Transportation is the biggest contributor to air pollution in Jakarta”

Visiting Suku Dinas Kesehatan Kota Administrasi Jakarta Selatan

On February 3, we met Ibu Siti Suwanti, S.K.M. and her friends in Suku Dinas Kesehatan Kota Administrasi Jakarta Selatan located in Radio Dalam, South Jakarta. They explained about a contiminated air from different sources, the effects from inhaling polluted air, and how government contribute to make awareness to people about the danger.

We conclude that the impact of air pollution towards our body can be mild, hard, until severe. We can get cough, irritated eyes, asthma, heart attack, cancer, even death. To prevent all those impact, we can do activities to reduce air pollution such as using public transportation, riding bike or walk, planting trees, and to prevent some pollution to get inside our body system, we should wear mask inside a busy transportation area.

Step 4 – Organizing Learning

From both visit, we feel more sure that the problem of air pollution from transportation is an urgent matter. In this step, we are making a plan on what we are going to do for our action. We run a survey throughout the school to find out how deep people understand about the problem, how much do they care to prevent and stop the problem, and how are they willing to change.

Sebagian besar orang tua murid, guru, dan staff sekolah sudah mengerti kandungan yang ada dalam polusi udara, sumber polusi udara, dampak polusi udara, dan kondisi polusi udara di Jakarta.

Step 5 – Monitoring Exhibition

To make sure our plan will be succeed, we do a regular meeting with our mentor and discuss with other group that have similar or in-line topic with ours. Not only that, we also ask and collaborate with Pak Mardi and Pak Arie for our action.

Step 6 – Action

We decided to do two types of action; Advocacy and Lifestyle Choice, because we want people to be aware of the danger caused by air pollution and do better action in their life as form of effort to reduce air pollution.
