According to a 2024 survey conducted in Indonesia, around 57 percent of respondents used AI tools to get ideas or inspiration in doing their school or university assignments. Additionally, over 55 percent of student respondents reported using AI to save time in doing those assignments (statista.com, 2024).

From the data above, we wonder: (1) How do we know they are using it correctly?; (2) What can we do as a school community to catch up with this trend?

STEP 1: IDENTIFYING GLOBAL ISSUE

Our curiosity about AI relates to our Unit of Inquiry (UOI), ‘How the World Works’, which is an inquiry into understanding the world and phenomena through discovery, design, innovation, possibilities, and impacts.

Furthermore, our topic also relates to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the fourth one, which is quality education.

The use of technological advance in education promotes the importance of ethical practices and responsible use among students.

  • Function of techological advance (AI) in education. (Function – Technological advance)
  • Development of AI and its connection in digital ethics at school. (Connection – Ethics)
  • Students responsibility in using AI for education (Ethical use) (Responsibility – Education)
  • Students should be able to understand the function of technological advance (AI) in educational concept
  • Students should be able to understand the development of AI and its connection in digital ethics at school
  • Students should be able to know their responsibilities in using AI for education and the ethical use of AI

Learning Continuum

Refer to our central idea, lines of inquiry, and learning outcomes, we realize that we have learnt about technology.

GRADE 3 UNIT 5
Technology and its use in society

We learned about how technology evolves from time to time. It can relate to our topic, AI, because AI is also a technology that always evolves from time to time and can have both positive and negative impacts on communities.

Qur'an Verse

As a Moslem, we need to understand the meaning of Qur’an verse. Our topic relate with Al Anbiya verse 7 about knowledgeable people.

QS AL ANBIYA: 7

“Dan kami tidak mengutus (Rasul-Rasul) sebelum engkau (Muhammad), melainkan beberapa orang laki-laki yang kami beri wahyu kepada mereka, maka tanyakanlah kepada orang yang berilmu jika kamu tidak mengetahui.”

IB Learner Profiles

During our process, we have implemented ten IB learner profiles. From those profiles, the most three that we use are Inquirers, Open-Minded, and Knowledgeable.

Inquirers

We are inquirers by asking more questions to discover more information more deeply. (Research, experts, etc.)

Open-Minded

We are open-minded by accepting each other’s opinions/ideas for the PYPX project.

Knowledgeable

We are knowledgeable by sharing our knowledge, what we have learnt with the mentors/others.

ATL Skills

We also have implemented five ATL skills. From those skills, the most three that we use are Thinking Skill, Social Skill, and Research Skill.

Thinking Skill

We implement thinking skill by:

  • Think to make questions/give ideas
  • Plan for the next steps
  • Think where to get the resources

Social Skill

We implement social skill by:

  • Interacting with other people
  • Accept other people’s opinion
  • Interview for resources

Research Skill

We implement research skill by:

  • Research deeper about our topic
  • Research in our free time if needed
  • Research for product

STEP 2: DETERMINE TIME FRAME

We determine our time frame and make sure everything is on track. But, before that, we create our pre-research questions as so we know what we are going to search and who we need to ask.

STEP 3: ENGAGING SUPPORT FROM LEARNING COMMUNITY

AI and Coding Teacher at Dicoding Indonesia

We need information regarding AI in education. Therefore, we have sessions with Pak Hasan. He told us about the use of AI in education and share us information that Indonesian government do not have AI policy and guidance.

Instructional Technology Lecture, Yogyakarta National University and Sampoerna University

We have Mr. Arkha as our expert. He is a lecturer and AI researcher. His insights will help us better understand how policies can protect students and ensure AI is used fairly and thoughtfully in learning environments.

Special Staff Mendikdasmen, Transformation Digital and Artificial Intelligence Division

We have Mr. Muchlas Rowi a special staff member at Mendikdasmen who focuses on transforming digital and artificial intelligence. His expertise provides us with essential insights into how AI policies and ethical practices protect students from the government’s point of view. However, he said that we still do not have AI policy and guidance at the elementary level, which confirms what Mr Hasan noted before.

Staff Khusus Mendikdasmen bidang transformasi digital dan kecerdasan buatan

We are grateful to have Mr. Craig Coutts, the Head of School at Yokohama International School. His leadership experience in international education offers valuable perspectives on how schools can approach the ethical use of AI. Mr Craig Coutts’s school already has AI policy and guidance. Therefore, we want to interview and adapt his school policies and guidance for our school. One thing that is important to remember is that creating policies always needs to be evaluated at a particular time.

STEP4: ORGANIZING LEARNING

In this step, we’ll use our curiosity to explore how people in the community use AI daily. We’ll think about what we’ve learned, ask more questions, and discover how AI can help or affect how we live and learn. Let’s get curious and dig deeper!

We predict that:

  • Al Jabr communities use AI for their learning activities.
  • Most students do not use AI correctly.

AI usage Survey to Al Jabr students from G2-MYP, Parents, and Teachers with total around 100 people.

Our research has proven the hypothesis that the Al Jabr community uses AI for its learning activities. However, we also found that most students still use AI incorrectly, even though they already know the dos and don’ts. Shows that understanding the rules is not always enough; students need more guidance and support to use AI responsibly and ethically in their learning.
