The Existences of Jakarta Local Fruits
Why should we conserve our biodiversity?
Salak Condet can no longer be found for sale in markets, but is instead grown by residents for personal use. Soil degradation in the Condet area, due to extreme erosion and water pollution has led to low productivity in the salak Condet trees. In addition, a lot of Betawi locals have sold their land for commercial or real estate development due to the area’s soaring land prices. So, How can we do to keep the local fruits exist?
Central Idea
“ Biodiversity relies on maintaining the interdependent balance of organisms within systems.”
Learning Outcomes
-Identify kinds of Jakarta local fruits that have existed in nature and ecosystems for a long time -Analyze how Jakarta local fruits, humans, and the environment are interdependent. -Organize how the Jakarta local fruit cultivation in plantations -Evaluate how human activity can have a positive impact on the environment.

Lines of Inquiry
- Ways in which organism and plants are interconnected in nature. -Ways in which ecosystem, biomes, and environments are interdependent. -How human interaction with the environment can affect the balance of systems.
Al Qur'an Verse
Al An'am ayat 99
Indonesia is a country famous for its natural wealth. From year to year, population growth has increased. In Jakarta as the capital of Indonesia there are several indigenous plants; gowok, salak condet, menteng, buni, kecapi, duku condet, melinjo, kecapi, jambu bol, mahoni and etc.
PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
Jakarta is home to an amazing array of delectable fruit varieties. While some fruits are available all year round, a large portion are seasonal. Jakarta’s population has increased dramatically recently. Everyone comes here and constructs a home. The trees are harder to find because of the skyrocketing cost of housing. Based on the information, Condet Garden’s land area in 1976 was 300 hectares. The Condet Garden is currently only 3 hectares, though. There, Salak Condet is a well-known fruit that has been chosen as the Jakarta mascot.
STEP i:
Identifying Globally Significant Issues
Exploring, Wondering, and Questioning
STEP iI:
Determining Timing and Time Frame
Making Connections between Previous Learning and Current Learning
Learning Jakarta local fruits brings us to reflect our previous study. Starting from K1, K2, G1, G2, G4 and G5. Let’s read below to know our understanding about biodiversity.
Trees Observation
The Guest Speakers and Field Trip
Guest Speaker
Ms Mayanih as our teacher. She is also Jakartanese. She originally was born in Jakarta. She understand well about Jalan Bango, Cilandak, South Jakarta. She told about her childhood and fruits that grew at that time for example; buah buni, alkesah, buah kokosan. She explained that the Jalan Bango area has very fertile soils. So many trees can grow well.
We plan to explore the places that name similar with the fruits. We divide into 4.
Reiner will go to Menteng, Ayko will go to Gandaria, Kaia will go to Bintaro, Alysha will go to Kemang.
STEP iII:
Engaging Support from the Learning Community
Collecting Data and Reporting Findings or Researching and Seeking Information
We had the opportunity to meet guest speakers from WWF. We joined and listened to the guest speaker explain why Jakarta local fruits are now so rare. We got the answer that changing the environment makes the trees sick.
Students Questions:
Students’ questions:
- What are the local fruits of Jakarta?
- Why are salak condet , duku condet, kemang, menteng and other Jakarta local Furits becoming so rare? What causes it to be rare?
- How can we do to keep local Jakarta fruits exist?
To deepen our insight into the local trees of Jakarta. Condet is a garden that has long been the garden of the original condet salak tree. It’s located in East Jakarta. We met with Mr. Hadi Turanto, S.I.P. to interview the original Jakarta Tree that grow there.
Mr. Hadi also told us that the Condet Salak Garden is also planted with some trees such as duku condet, nangka, avocados and others. The Condet Fruit Reserve Garden officially became a garden in the preservation of the condet salak tree in 2006. There are seven flavours of condette. Now, however, the gardens that were once vast are now about 3 hectares wide. There are 149 salak condet trees, and there are 3,500 duku trees.
Duku trees is about eight to twelve meters high. It can be harvested in one year; it’s gathered every four months. Meanwhile, the age of the salak condet tree in the condet fruit reserve is about 100 years’ old that was planted in the Dutch colonization. The height of the trees up to 2,5 meters.
Reflection From Cagar Buah Condet
STEP iV:
Organizing Learning
Experimenting and Playing with Possibilities Solving Problems in a Variety of Way
Next fieldtrip, we went to Urban Healing Garden Ragunan on Tuesday 27 February 2024. Pak Adji taught me how to plant the Jakarta Local Fruits. We did planting by using stek, grafting and repotting.
The reproduction process in these plants takes place in a variety of ways. Plants that reproduce in a natural vegetative way will reproduce using parts of the plant itself. Plants do not need human help in the process of their reproduction, because they will use one part of the plants themselves.

Reiner
Reiner went to Menteng Park a few days ago. He tried to ask someone there about Menteng in the past. He wondered why that’s a place named Menteng. Are you curious about it? Please watch this video.

Kaia
Kaia explored Bintaro. She went sightseeing on Bintaro Street and saw so many trees still exist there. Hmm, she also found 3 fun facts about bintaro fruits. What are they? Let’s watch the video below!

Parents-Mentors Meeting
STEP V:
Monitoring the Exhibition
Taking and Depending a Position
After observing, asking the Al Jabr community by using a questionnaire, interviewing the experts, and doing the experiment to cultivate the plants, we concluded that we needed to share our knowledge, share an action, and plant the trees to produce the oxygen. Oxigen is very essential to our soul and body.
SELF-ASSESSMENT
We join mentor meeting, literature study, interview the experts, do experiements, sharing to others and practice for panel.
- We analyze that Jakarta original fruits get the impact from the city where has many open spaces converted into houses, offices, and more
- We analyze the increasing population has a negative impact on local fruits production
- We analyze that do cultivation the fruits is the way to grow and produce their own food
Now, we understand the development of the buildings, houses, and more is a critical global issue which threathens the sustainable use of the land by future generations.
STEP VI:
Sharing the Exhibition
Establishing and Testing Theories
We share our knowledge with another school, North Jakarta Intercultural School. They are very welcome and happy to know about Jakarta Local Fruits. They are very enthusiastic about knowing how to repot the pot.
We planted Salak condet, melinjo and duku condet in our school area.
