STEP 1: Identifying Globally Significant Issues

Around 32% of CO2 emissions are from residential sources because most of the electricity from PLN is produced from fossil fuels.
Indonesia was the world’s fourth-largest emitter of greenhouse gases in 2015. On 23 April 2016, Indonesia, along with 194 countries, signed the Paris Agreement, a binding agreement that brings all nations together to combat climate change and adapt to its effects.

STEP 2: Determining Time Frame

WE
WONDER

  1. Why is the house provided with solar panel electricity source? (Function)
  2. How can we build a house with non toxic materials and environmental friendly? (Responsibility)
  3. How can we separate rubbish into organic and non organic? 3R concept? (Responsibility)
  4. Do they provide open space to plant vegetable and shade tree? (Function)
  5. What are the programs of Ministry of Public Works and Housing to achieve Paris Agreement goals? (Connection)
  6. What can we do to upgrade our home into a green home? (Responsibility)

Meet our Experts #1

Ibu Aini Rinarti, ST., MT.

Get to Know Bu Aini

Bu Aini is an Enviromental Expert Consultant from the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (Kementrian PUPR)

From Bu Aini’s session, we got to know the definition of Green Home. A green home is a home that is designed to be environmentally friendly. It is built or modified so it will use less energy, water and natural resources.

STEP 3: Engaging Support from Learning Community

Meet our Experts #2

Bapak Fajar Santoso, ST., M.S.E. OBSERVING KEMENPUPR BUILDING
Bapak Fajar is an Enviromental Expert Consultant from the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (Kementrian PUPR). With Bapak Fajar, we observed the Kemen PUPR building based on the 7 parameters.

A FIELD TRIP to Semesta Parayasa

We visited Semesta Parayasa Housing in Bogor. This housing is the sample of a green home. Kemen PUPR prepared this project known as Indonesia Green Affordable Housing Program.

STEP 4: Organizing Learning Reflections

Here is the reflections that we have created during our research. We utilized various templates of reflections such as KWL chart, six thinking head, and hamburger writing to write down our understanding of every articles that we read, video materials that we watched or sessions that we have had.
We also conducted Green Home Survey to Al Jabr communities to see the implementation of green home. This is the result of the survey. Unfortunately, we could not found green home with gold category in Al Jabr community.

STEP 5: Monitoring the Exhibition

"The Best Practice" is the things that we can do to upgrade our home into a Green Home

Energi Saving

  • full loads of laundry
  • use the cold water cycle in your washing machine
  • set your air-con temperature between 23°C-25°C for optimum cooling
  • an organized fridge allows cool air to circulate more efficiently
  • completely switch any electricity devices when not in use

Water Saving

  • average water usage for each individual is below 180 liters/day
  • turn off the water while you are applying soap and when you brush your teeth
  • take shorter showers (less than 5 minutes)
  • wash clothes with full load
  • use a bowl of water to peel and clean vegetables and fruits instead of running water
  • collect rainwater for non-potable uses (e.g. washing car, watering plants, washing outdoor area etc.)

3 Rs

  • buy reusable, not disposable
  • bring your own take-away containers
  • say no to bottled water-bring your own reusable tumblers
  • use reusable shopping bags
  • use eco-friendly paper/ washable plastic cups & plates for parties

Transportation

  • use public transport/walk/cycle
  • carpool when possible
  • regularly service your vehicles to ensure it is running in optimum condition to reduce harmful emissions

Air Quality

  • frequently open windows to encourage natural ventilation
  • clean air-cond filters regularly (once a month)

Greenery

  • for landed homes, ensure outdoor area has grass area/ greenery (at least 50% of non-built up area)
  • have your own herb & vegetable garden

STEP 6: Sharing the Exhibition

1st Action: Advocacy

We created a short movie about Green Home with its 7 parameters. We took the role as the actress and the actors in this movie.

We would like to show our movies to other people. Thus, we released the Green Home movie in the main hall and invited grade 1 until 5 and the teachers.

2nd Action: Advocacy

3rd Action:
Lifestyle Choices

We created a design of a green home. This design ifs following the 7 parameters of Green Home. Firstly, we created the sketch in a paper to be put on digital edit.

4th Action: Entrepreneurship

We created a design of Green Home with 7 parameters in a popular game named ROBLOX. We hope that the people who plays ROBLOX may aware of the concept of Green Home through this game.

5th Action: Social Entrepreneurship

After we released the movie, we shared the reminder sticker to the audience. With this reminder, we hope that everyone can make their home more green home.

7th Action: Lifestyle Choice

We donated water meter to our beloved school.

6th Action: Participation

We planted comsumeable plant in the school garden.
