Net Zero
The same as sunscreen to protect our face, ozone layer protect the earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Because of harmful emissions entering the atmosphere, the ozone layer has developed a hole. This hole makes large amounts of ultraviolet light into the earth and it makes the earth has much warmer temperatures. That is why we need to be net zero.
Researchers
Hi, welcome to our website!
We are Grade 5 students welcoming you to know deeper about our research on net zero. We were curious about why our ozone layer keeps depleting and what we can do to support Net Zero. Here, we are proudly telling you how it happens and ways to support Net Zero.
Raqi
Exactly before the exhibition journey start, I was sick and that made me worried I will lost a lot of information but suddenly I am convinced on my friends that they could help me to catch up and they support until I am here.
Anisa
During the exhibition I feel a little bit nervous when practicing in front of the school leaders. Alhamdulillah, after a lot of practice, I could present the presentation panel smoothly and confident.
Kala
During the exhibition I felt kind of not much because I have done stuff like this a lot so I'm confident enough and I can help my friends.
Gerrard
During the exhibition I first felt confused what to make the topic about but then Kala came up with the topic. During the experiment I was not there so I was worried about our project and the journal. Alhamdulillah the presentation went well.
Mentors
We are grateful to be hand in hand with the students during this exhibition journey. It is amazing how they came up with the issues, had fun doing the experiments, and did an enjoyable action.
Moreover, it was a challenging experience; knowing that we have to do mentor meetings, interview the experts, and conduct two different experiments. Overall, we are honored to witness the students reaching their goals.

Ozone layer depletion
Why we choose this problem
We choose this problem to complete and fully be Net Zero, stop the ozone layer depletion and try to decrease the green house effect.
Al Qur'an Verse
Q.S Ar Rum ayat 41
” Telah nampak kerusakan di darat dan di laut disebabkan karena perbuatan tangan manusia, supaya Allah merasakan kepada mereka sebahagian dari (akibat) perbuatan mereka, agar mereka kembali (ke jalan yang benar).”
The ozone layer is a thin part of the Earth’s atmosphere that absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. When it is depleted, this radiation can reach the surface – causing potential harm to humans and other living things. Ultraviolet rays can damage DNA and cause sunburn, increasing the long-term risk of problems such as skin cancer.
Companies, countries and even celebrities have started setting “net zero” targets to combat ozone layer depletion. Theoretically, the concept is simple—balance greenhouse gas removal with greenhouse gas emissions, so that the overall net emissions are zero. However, without a real global agreement on who is responsible for emissions, and with new technologies to balance carbon in its early days, achieving net zero will prove to be a huge task.
PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
Using articles related to ozone layer depletion and net zero, we were able to identify globally significant issues. The next step is to write down our ideas in a graphic organizer or mind map about how achieving net zero is important fix the ozone layer.
STEP i:
Identifying Globally Significant Issues
Exploring, Wondering, and Questioning
STEP iI:
Determining Timing and Time Frame
Making Connections between Previous Learning and Current Learning
We examine each step and develop a timeline to make sure that the exhibition project runs well. To get a better comprehension, we also invited some experts to share their knowledge about solar panel and wind turbine. We plan to take an action within the specified time frame once we gathered enough information.

the Guest Speakers/Fieldtrip
Teachers of SD Negeri 08 Ragunan. One of elementary schools in Jakarta that supports Net Zero.
For our first field trip, we went to SD 08 Ragunan. This is a school which has already apply the net zero movement, their main source of power comes from using Solar Panels. We learned that there must be an inverter to change DC currents to AC currents.
The building has low ceiling with a lot of windows and open space. Only several rooms that use Air Conditioner and there is no trash bin so the member of that school all take responsibility to manage their food waste and garbage, by taking their own food container and bring their garbage home.
Sales Executive PT ATW Solar Residential
We went to atw solar residential to learn more about the basics and advance stuff about solar panels like hybrid on grid and off grid.
On grid is a solar panel without batteries and uses PLN, this is much cheaper than off grid.
Off grid is a solar panel that uses battery, it’s more expensive but more efficient.
Finally Hybrid it is the mix of battery solar panel and PLN solar panel.
STEP iII:
Engaging Support from the Learning Community
Collecting Data and Reporting Findings or Researching and Seeking Information
To answer all of our questions we collected in Step 1, we visited the experts to collect information about energy conservation. They are Ibu Soleha, S.Pd dan Bapak Sutino, S.Pd (from SD Negeri 08 Ragunan), Ibu Nurcahaya Pinem (from PT ATW Solar Residential), Bapak Gigih Udi Atmo (from Ditjen EBTKE) and Bapak Malik Ibrochim (from Asosiasi Energi Angin Indonesia). We gained many new knowledge about the things we are curious about, and the idea for experiments and actions.

Here we learned about the 2 types of wind turbine which is horizontal and vertical wind turbines. Vertical wind turbine is used mostly on houses and street lights that has low wind current. While Horizontal wind turbine are used mostly in high wind current to make large amount of energy to deliver to cities.
Kepala bidang potensi energi angin di Asosiasi Energi Angin Indonesia.
He is a wind turbine expert which tells us specs and function of wind turbine and even website that shows the best place for wind turbine installation. The website is called https://globalwindatlas.info/en. Here we learned about how wind turbines work, the history of wind turbines, advantage and disadvantage.
Wind turbine advantage:
- It can be used 24 hours as long as there is wind
- Wind turbine is able to power up whole village
- Wind turbine can produce much more energy than solar panel, wind turbine can power up a whole village, while solar panel can only power up one house
Wind turbine disadvantage:
- The wind turbine is noisy because of the friction between the blades and the generator
- It takes big amount of area to install, and not every location is suitable for installation
- Takes a lot of time to construct the wind turbine
STEP iV:
Organizing Learning
Experimenting and Playing with Possibilities Solving Problems in a Variety of Way
After interviewing the experts, we organize our information by conducting two experiments.
The first is solar panel experiment. By doing this solar panel experiment, we want to test if our hypothesis is correct. The idea is the mini solar panel absorbs heat or light energy. Then the LED light will turn on. We test the lights with room light, phone light, flashlight, and sunlight. Based on the results, the LED lights cannot turn on in room lighting meanwhile the LED lights turn on brightly with the flashlight and sunlight.
The second is wind turbine experiment. We believe the wind turbine produced electrical energy, then the LED light will turn on in our hypothesis. For the wind turbine we made the blades carefully so it’s not sharp and usable. Then we tested if it functions or not, fortunately it works very well.
We also make the scale model. We make three houses represent a village in which electricity sources are able to be provided by the wind turbines, because the power production is generated by the blades. Then another house represents a building that is using solar panel, because it can only generate usable energy for one house and cost way less.

Parents-Mentors Meeting
STEP V:
Monitoring the Exhibition
Taking and Depending a Position
We monitor the progress of our exhibition project by joining a mentor meeting three times a week with all members and all mentors. We put ideas we had during discussions, share ideas, and suggestions from our mentors and the experts through the exhibition journal.
SELF-ASSESSMENT
We are able to interview 4 guest speakers and finish the main product with no issues
- The difference between solar panel and wind turbine
- The importance of net zero
- The ways to stop greenhouse gasses and ozone layer depletion
We are able to share our learning with others
STEP VI:
Sharing the Exhibition
Establishing and Testing Theories
As long life learners, we believe that the more we share our knowledge, the more we become knowledgeable. We share our project in our action.
We decided to do action of advocacy. It is when we created to make a poster about how to save energy. The poster then shared to SD Al Hasaniah. We also did a similar campaign about how to save energy from our everyday life to K2 and K1 students.
