An inquiry into systems, structures and networks through: • interactions within and between social and ecological systems • approaches to livelihoods and trade practices: intended and unintended consequences • representation, collaboration and decision-making
Central Idea
Unhealthy food choices increase diabetes in children and affect their health and well-being.
Lines of Inquiry
1. Types of food that trigger diabetes (Form - Structure) 2. Strategies that can lower rates of diabetes (Change - Adaptation) 3. Government and citizens’ responsibility to avoid diabetes (Responsibility - Initiative)
Key Concept
Form Change Responsibility
Al-Quran Verses
QS. Al-A’raf ayat 31:
“Wahai anak cucu Adam! Pakailah pakaianmu yang bagus pada setiap (memasuki) masjid, makan dan minumlah, tetapi jangan berlebihan. Sungguh, Allah tidak menyukai orang yang berlebih-lebihan.”
QS. Al-Baqarah ayat 168:
“Wahai manusia! Makanlah dari (makanan) yang halal dan baik yang terdapat di bumi, dan janganlah kamu mengikuti langkah-langkah setan. Sungguh, setan itu musuh yang nyata bagimu.”
Step 1: identifying global issues
About 830 million people worldwide have diabetes, the majority living in low-and middle-income countries. More than half of people living with diabetes are not receiving treatment. Both the number of people with diabetes and the number of people with untreated diabetes have been steadily increasing over the past decades. (WHO)
Over 800 million adults worldwide now have diabetes—four times as many as in 1990. This huge increase, reported in The Lancet on World Diabetes Day, shows how serious the diabetes problem has become. Researchers from the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration and the World Health Organization say we urgently need to do more to stop this rise in cases and make sure everyone, especially in poorer countries, can get the treatment they need.
In the beginning of the exhibition, we collaborate to find out the current issue that relates to ourselves, formulate the central idea and plan our inquiry cycle.
Did you know?
Diabetes is responsible for 6.7 million deaths in 2021 - 1 every 5 seconds.
Recent studies have also shown that Type 1 diabetes is increasing in the pediatric population. Right now, approximately one out of every 400 children is diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, which makes it a fairly common disease. The other main form of diabetes, Type 2, is also becoming more common in children, and is likely related to increased body weight.
Given the alarming news about childhood diabetes, we feel it’s crucial to deepen our understanding of this issue. We want to learn what diabetes actually is, what its symptoms are in children, why it occurs, and how it can be prevented.
Step 2: determining time frame
PYPx is never a one-person job. In this step, the students set the timeline and deadlines to help visualize the planning process and the end goal – that way, the students can stay motivated and focused.
So here we use measurables deadlines into our timeline to track the progress!
Before a further research, we gather the information and try to define what actually diabetes is.. We found out that…
To inquire about diabetes, PYP program has supported us from the previous grades. In grade 1, we learned about healthy lifestyle. In grade 3, we learned about human body system and in grade 5, we learned about government system.
After setting up the timeline, we create the learning goals and the success criteria that we want to achieve.
Step 3: Engaging Support From the Learning Community
Along the journey, we couldn’t achieve the goals without the support from our community. Before we find out more about how diabetes affects child’s life, we visited the experts that are directly linked to the issue that we are inquiring about to get more knowledge and perspective.
Types of Sugar: Complex sugar gives long-lasting energy, while simple sugar gives quick energy, causing a sugar rush.
How Sugar Works: Glucose can’t get into the cells without insulin, which acts like a key. Too much glucose harms organs.
Benedict’s Test: A test for sugar in drinks—Green = low, Orange = moderate, Red = high.

Step 4: organizing learning
After getting detailed information about diabetes, we were curious about what we consumed. Therefore, we decided to conduct the science experiment. The experiment is called the Benedict Test. What is the benedict test? It is an experiment to find out the sugar level in our drinks.

Step 5: monitoring the exhibition
Proceeding to the next step, now we have to monitor the exhibition. As IB students, especially PYP, we are encouraged to keep learning beyond the classroom, beyonds grades and beyond today. Here are the 10 reasons why that matters.
We think this PYP Exhibition is ideal for us because....
The three-stagelearning and engagement process in Community Engagement
Through community engagement, we explore and prepare by learning how food choices affect our health and how too much sugar can lead to diabetes. With the IB helping our exhibition journey, we relate and act by spreading awareness to others, and then evaluate and share by seeing how our actions make our community healthier.
Step 6: sharing the exhibition
While knowledge is powerful, its true value is only realized when we share it and act on it. By combining what we know with meaningful action, we create real impact and that’s exactly what we aim to do in this exhibition.
We begin taking action to ourselves, these are pictures of us eating healthy food as our commitment to apply our knowledge. We also do our best to have a balanced lifestyle by exercising.
This poster informs the types of diabetes, causes, symptoms & definition.
Diabetes in Numbers
We present data of diabetes in Indonesia and the world through an infographic poster.
diabetes Stops Here!
We encourage people to have a balanced and healthy life-style.
Not only creating posters, we also would like to share our knowledge to others in a fun way too.
After creating posters, then what we do next?
We decided to share our knowledge to other students with hope that they can learn too the importance of having a balanced lifestyle. So.. here are a glimpse of our journey while singing, presenting the poster and play games to Al Jabr students.

D-day
The panel presentation is not the end of our journey, but it really determines the results of our assessment. We present our result and analysis in the panel session with the head of school, school principal, PYP coordinator, grade 5 teachers, mentors and our parents. Nervousness, emotion, happy are a mixed up feelings.
Alhamdulillah,
The panel session was run smoothly, we were able to speak fluently, and finished on time. We hope that the knowledge gained and the actions we have taken will be good for us, mentors, parents and the community. Aamiin
