Chemical Additives in Food We Eat

How the World Works

An inquiry into interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact of humankind and the environment.

Central Idea

Chemicals in processed food might affect human health.

Lines of Inquiry

1. The change amd the consequences of consuming too much processed food to human health.
2. The connection of processed food with chemical additives.
3. The responsibililty of people to understand and classify the dangerous chemicals in certain food consumed by people.

DOUGHNUT'S ECONOMY

Doughnut's Economy is a ring to guide and help us build a better future, especially a water as resouce for everyone. This is they way for us to address the global challenges that everyone is experiencing right now, used in many cities in central and western europe such as Brussels, Amsterdam, and many more. In our project, there are two left falling short on water pollution, which are water and health. These things cause chemical pollution.

Al-Quran Verses

QS: Al-Baqarah ayat 172:
“Wahai orang-orang yang beriman! Makanlah dari rezeki yang baik yang Kami berikan kepada kamu dan bersyukurlah kepada Allah, jika kamu hanya menyembah kepada-Nya.

QS: An-Naml ayat 40:
Dia (Saleh) berkata, “Wahai kaumku! Mengapa kamu meminta disegerakan keburukan sebelum (kamu meminta) kebaikan? Mengapa kamu tidak memohon ampunan kepada Allah , agar kamu mendapat rahmat?”

Step 1:
identifying global issues

Today, we are surrounded by Ultra Processed Foods (UPF) like soft drinks, packaged snacks, cookies and biscuits, candies, ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat meals, and instant noodles. All of which are easily accessible to all.

However..

the rise in UPF consumption is parallel with the increase in obesity worldwide.

UPFs are rich in calories, sugars, unhealthy fats and sodium, and contributing to the rise in chronical diseases. Unfortunately, trends show that today, the consumption of UPFs has replaced the consumption of natural foods. Besides that, it is very difficult to stop eating UPF. That’s why the students choose the topic “Chemical Additives in Food” because we want to have healthier habit and we do believe every child has the right to have a healthy diet and life longer. For that, we need action now!

Step 2:
determining time frame

PYPx is never a one-person job. In this step, the students set the timeline and deadlines to help visualize the planning process and the end goal – that way, the students can stay motivated and focused.

So here we use measurables deadlines into our timeline to track the progress!

Step 3:
Engaging Support From the Learning Community

We invited the experts to get more knowledge and perspective.

  • Definition of Ultra processed food.
  • Nutritionist that our body need.
  • The disease that might happen if we don’t eat healthy food.
  • How to read the Nutrition Fact Label.
  • Max amount of sugar, salt, and fat we can consume per day.

We learn how to do a scientific experiment to prove the bad impact of sugar to our body.

Step 4:
organizing learning

First thing first, we conducted a survey to answer the question:
  • Does everyone like to consume sugar everyday?

There are 93 respondents in this survey. The respondents of this survey are Al Jabr Community. The data stated that 50% of water polluton is caused by littering from humans. This means our hypothesis is correct and we can do something as our action to reduce the water pollution so we can provide and protect our water resources.

Now it's time to do the experiment!

To prove that too much sugar is bad for our health, we are doing “Yeast Experiment” to see what will happen to our guts

Alhamdulillah the experiment was succeed! We can see that there is the difference between the 1st jar, 2nd jar, and 3rd jar. It turns out, the jar with sugar produced so many foam (that represents gases) and the yeast (that represents bad bacteria) was growing up.

Step 5:
monitoring the exhibition

Tuning In

First, we find background problem and article from newspaper. Then, we brainstorm our ideas into one central idea which about “Technology and Scientific Advance Innovation Supports Human Needs of Water”

Sorting Out

Third, we classify the types of water and decide to focus on analyzing grey water.

Making Conclusion

After that, we come up with the solution that can people do as Al Jabr Community to reduce the waste water and water pollution around us.

Finding Out

Second, we gather the information more from the guest speakers and fieldtrip, and also do a reflection.

Going Further

Fourth, we do an experiment by making “Yeast Experiment” to prove that too much sugar is bad for our health.

Taking Action

Finally, we share our knowledge to others by promoting 10 solutions through: Participation and Advocacy by making personal action and big action.

Step 6:
sharing the exhibition

We choose
to create series of book.

The Facts About the Food We Eat

This book is telling about how important water is and solutions to save the water from water pollution.

Healthy Recipes Book fo Kids

This book contains activities that children can do after reading or listening to the storytelling from Air Sahabatku. This book aims to engage the readers and reflect the new knowledge they have learn from Air Sahabatku book.

Experiment Poster

This book is telling about what is grey water and black water. Also how are they affect our water resources.

Campaign Video

We also create interactive board game for entertaining the children while learning about water.

After creating series of book,
then what we do next?

D-day

The panel presentation is not the end of our journey, but it really determines the results of our assessment. We present our result and analysis in the panel session with the head of school, school principal, PYP coordinator, grade 5 teachers, mentors and our parents. Nervousness, emotion, happy are a mixed up feelings.

Alhamdulillah,

The panel session was run smoothly, we were able to speak fluently, answered questions well, and finished on time. We hope that the knowledge gained and the actions we have taken will be good for us, mentors, parents and the community. Aamiin
